=/\=Dresden to Mitchell I may have found something please come to my quarters.=/\=

=^=I'm on my way Lt.=^= Lt. Commander Mitchell answered tersely. Over the past 24 hours the security chief had already presented several reports to the XO, most of which Pete found to be trivial or mundane dead ends, and he was getting the distinct idea that Dresden was producing phantom reports as a punishment for undermining him.
"This had better be good this time." Mitchell said to his empty quarters. He'd not long lay down on his bed after completing his report, and counter signing all the reports send to him from the department heads. He wouldn't have been so late had it not been for that damned Orion captain and his wives.
Pete was in the process of putting on his uniform jacket when the yellow alert went off. "Saved by the bell."
=^=Mitchell to Dresden, scrap that, just send your findings to me, I'll review them later.=^=

Pete put his jacket on quicker with the renewed vigor that only an officer on a combat vessel truly understood, as he walked briskly down the corridor, and with in minutes was on the bridge.
"What's the craic Jim?" Lt. Commander Mitchell asked the CO as he took up the operations station on the bridge.

"Captain, we're receiving a general distress call. It's from a Federation Transport. The UFST Harlem's Folly. Her captain is saying that they are under attack by marauders who are using Federation runabouts and need assistance."

James' felt his heartrate jump slightly as he turned to the helm. "Set a course to the location of the distress call, maximum warp."

The NPC helmsman ran his fingers over the controls, as Incursion made a sharp dip and began to change her course. "Aye, sir. We'll intercept in three minutes time."

This had been a very mundane mission so far for a warship, thought Celeste. Still, she had to prove to the Lt. and XO that there was a reason for her to be here. The XO hadn’t approached in the last couple of days about a pet project, and so she had kinda forgotten about it. She noticed that her shift would be over in 2 hours when her attention was drawn to one of the other Ensigns. She listened as he reported to the Captain that there was a distress call. She remembered something one of her instructors said. “Long periods of boredom punctuated by sheer moments of terror or something like that.”

"Take us to Yellow alert." the Captain ordered, an amber light bathing over the bridge. James turned and looked at Ensign Day, who was again manning the tactical station for Charlie Shift. "Ensign, give me a overview of Harlem's Folly. What is her ship class, cargo and destination?" he asked as he gently gripped the armrests of his command chair as he waited to see what would unfold when they arrived. If the situation was true, even a handful of runabouts would be able to overrun a transport in no time at all

”Aye, aye Captain.” Celeste paused for just a moment to pull up the Harlem’s Folly from the database. “it is a Karemma class Transport sir. Minimal Shielding and Armament. It’s cargo is said to be replicators and medical supplies bound for Talgara III. We should have it onscreen momentarily. As the beep, she transferred the long range images of the Harlem’s Way to the viewscreen.

“We should be in firing range in less than 30 seconds.”

(oc - hope that's okay)

{Pre time jump Razz}

It was the end of Charlie Shift and for the most part, Celeste had had a pretty productive day. She had narrowly escaped the reaming that was to be had by her Security Chief. Actually, it was just postponed until now, but more about her day. She had come up some useful battle simulations against ships that they might encounter near the Neutral Zone and the Boss man had been somewhat impressed. Charlie Shift had ended no more stunnings or stabbings or anyone being vented into space. But still there was one thing left to do.

She would have to face the music and own up to her actions at the shipyard with the Chief of Security. The fact that the XO had stepped in on her behalf, now might not have gone over so well, but it was time to get it over with.

So, forgoing the meal with the rest of Charlie Shift, Celeste headed down a different corridor and stood outside her Department Head's door. She sounded the chime and waited to be let in.

Dresden lifted his head from his work, "Enter."

He saw the young ensign walk into his quarters the girl was just a few years older than his own daughter, a daughter he had not seen in over a year a daughter whose mother did everything in her power to avoid his being able to see her. The young woman was standing at attention in front of him. He didn't get out of his chair to speak to her. "Do you know why I got so mad?"

Celeste knew there had to be several answers to that question. One, she had actually stunned someone in the hangar. Two, instead of reporting it to him immediately, Celeste had made the mistake of letting it circulate around the ship, thus Dresden was probably one of the last to hear about it, which led to, Three, disciplinary action being taken out of his hands.

Well, let’s start with the obvious, she thought. “I stunned one of the techs in the hangar to get the results that we needed”, she answered, not really sure which one of those answers would suit him.

"That's not it. Tell me something what is different about this ship than most federation vessels?"

Scratch that one, she thought.

“This ship is smaller. There are less people on it, so we have to rely on each other more than on a big ship, sir.”

Dresden let a small smile show on his face at her statement she was smarter than he originally gave her credit for good.

"Close that is a reason but not the one I was thinking of. This class of ship is the only ship ever designed by the Federation for only has one job and that is for war. Every other ship primary job is escort or diplomatic or science we will always be on the front lines you will see more life or death action on this ship than most officers who were not a part of the war have seen in there career."

Dresden made eye contact with the young ensign to see the gravity of the situation, "I have seen people die I have lost friends I was going to talk to everyone in the department but I want your standard settings on your phasers to be set to kill, as one day it might save your life or better yet the person beside you. We will see combat and we will see it often. So my rules are simple something happens tell me I have been on star ships longer most any one on this ship since before the XO joined the academy. To do what I tell you don't question the order trust that my priority first is to the people on this ship second to innocent lives third to the mission. 3 If you don't understand something ask, I would rather have you ask a stupid question and do the job right then not ask and make a mistake, measure twice cut once what my dad always told me. 4 And the most important rule is simple," He paused here to show a little grin crack threw, "don't suck be good. Any questions?"

Celeste felt like she had dodges another phaser blast, but what the Leiutenant said was right. The Defiant class would not be hosting a banquet or ceremony any time soon. It was a ship of war and mistakes were more fatal here than on a Galaxy Class ship.

“No questions, sir. I understand and appologize. I won’t let you down.”

Even as she said it, she knew that he had probably heard that line before… but also that she would break that promise. She knew it. He knew it. But such as it was… no one was perfect.

Dresden stood up here he reached out his hand, "Well good pleasure to meet you Ensign Day you are dismissed enjoy your first day on the ship." With that the young women left the room and Dresden went back to work on trying to gather as much information as he could.

James turned in his command chair as Commander Mitchell made his way onto the bridge, giving him a sideways smile as he made his way to the Operations station. "We just received a distress call from a Federation-transport that claims to be under attack by pirates. We're about ninety seconds to intercept, so it was nice of you to join us.", the Captain joked lightly as he put his attention back to the main viewer.

The image of the Harlem's Folly on the main viewer as it came closer into the view. The elongated-transport looked of standard Federation design, with a main hull and large nacelles that hung down on either side. The ship was drifting by an asteroid field, running lights flashing intermittently as it hung in the dead of space.

"Taking us out of warp, Captain. Target is three hundred thousand kilometers to starboard, and is still emitting a distress signal." the helmsman reported as the streaks of stars disappeared to a more pointed starfield. The main viewer began settling on the transport, giving the bridge crew a closer look at the alleged ship that needed rescuing

"The ship is listing, and is showing signs of mild hull ruptures that correspond with weapons fire. I'm still running a scan on what type of ships could have caused the damage, sir. Her escape pods have been jettisoned and I'm picking up a Type D radiation leak from the port nacelle," the science officer chimed in.

"Are there any lifesigns onboard?" Captain Takahashi asked, more out of protocol than out of expectation. If the Folly had released her escape pods, it wasn't likely that there would be anyone still behind, but they needed to know for sure.

The science officer ran his hands over his console, scanning the Federation transport intently. “No lifesigns that I can pick up, but the radiation coming from the ship is causing some disruption to our sensors, Captain.”

"Are we picking up any signals of any other ships in the area? The distress call said that they were under attack. So… where are the attackers?" James asked as he looked at the single transport, baiting them on the view screen. They weren't five minutes into this and something already felt out of place. "What about the escape pods? Surely we'll be able to pick up an ion-trail from them?..."

The science officer continued to run his scans, a silent swear slipping under his lips as he typed furiously while trying to provide his commanding officer some answers. "Negative, Captain. I’m not picking up any warp signatures or ion trails from any other ships in the area.”

The hairs of James’ neck started to stand.  Something definitely wasn’t right. Incursion should at least be able to pick up a warning beacon from one of the pods, or something nearby. Letting out a sharp breath that he hadn’t realized that he was holding, the Captain started issuing orders to the bridge crew.

He looked over to Ensign Day at Tactical, and tilted his head over to the NPC at the science station. “Ensign, help him out. See if you know any tricks that might help us locate those missing escape pods,” the captain ordered as the Ensign moved her away across the bridge. Escaping attack ships he could accept, but an escape pod had low thruster capability. They wouldn’t be able to get very far, considering the time that Incursion had picked up their distress call.

(Celeste)

The Captain turned to Commander Mitchell, who was sitting at Operations. “Pete, I want you to take Lieutenant Dresden and secure that transport,” he paused as he turned to look back at the main viewer. “Something doesn’t smell right, but we can’t just leave that ship drifting for pirates to actually steal later on. Take another NPC crewman, if you need to. See if you can find any information from the ship’s computer that would explain what her last operations were before the escape pods were jettisoned.”

(Mitchell)

James tapped his com-badge. =/\= Lieutenant Dresden, meet Commander Mitchell in Transporter Room 1. =/\=, was all the Captain said as he turned his attention to his next set of orders.

(Dresden)

Takahashi turned back to where Ensign Day and her NPC counterpart were working. “Run another scan of the transport before Commander Mitchell’s team heads over. Make sure we’re not missing anything obvious that would literally blow up in our faces…”, the captain ordered as the NPC looked to Ensign Day, as if to decide how they were going to divide up the Captain’s orders.

James made sure that they both caught his somewhat sympathetic glance, before nodding that he still expected things done quickly.  He knew he had given them a lot to do in such a short time period, but with a crew of less than fifty, you had to learn to burden your fair share of the workload.

As his executive officer stood to leave the bridge, the Captain cleared his throat to get his attention. “Pete, report back every five minutes, alright? Take your time and be careful…” he said with a slight worry to his voice. James had never liked dealing with something that he couldn’t see. A straight-up fight was just much easier…

”With your permission sir, I would like to send a class 2 probe into the asteroid field to scan it.  It could be that they are inside the edges, being hidden from scan.  I would also like to conduct a tachyon scan of the area.  It could be that whoever attacked the Harlem’s Folly is cloaked and still hiding out there, waiting for us.  The lack of warp signatures and ion trails makes that a likely case.”

[tag Tagakakacobiachi Miru II]

“Starting sweep now, sir.”

Celeste sent the probe along the most common trajectory that the escape pods would have taken to the asteroid field.  Then she began her search of the surrounding area, beginning first with the area around the Incursion and then expanding outward toward the freighter.  It would only take a few seconds for the data to scroll across her screen.

“I’m not picking up anything near the Incursion sir, and the Harlem’s Folly seems… wait… the tachyon sweep is picking up something  on the far side of the freighter sir, but the radiation leak is distorting it.  We would have to move past the Harlem’s Folly in order to get a better scan of it, sir.”

Celeste’s fingers flew over her console and the other Crewman, who’s name Celeste didn’t know was busy at her console.  Celeste scanned the freighter again, this time going slowly, more like a full body scan, less like a cursory glance.  Still, that damn radiation was blocking a lot of what they needed to scan.

“Sorry sir, but that radiation leak is fouling up our scans of the rear of the ship.  I can tell you, though that the front half of the ship is devoid of life, atmosphere is steady and power is on.  The rear half of the ship, well, to be honest with you Cap, it’s a crap shoot.  It could be fine, it could be open to vacuum, or it could be hiding a hundred pirates and the XO and Lieutenant would be walking in to ambush.  There’s no way to tell from here…”  Celeste broke off as the crewman approached her they spoke in hushed tones.

“Actually Cap, we do have two plans for dealing with the radiation.  One is send a crew over to fix it… two, we use our forward phasers to surgically cut that nacelle away from the ship and then tractor beam it away from the ship.”  She paused for  a moment, exchanging glances with the Crewman.  “Neither are ideal, sir.”

James bit his lower lip slightly at Celeste's suggestion, more because he hadn't thought about it. It was more than possible that cloaked ships could have been hiding in the area near the edges of the asteroid field, especially with reports that Romulan vessels had been suffering from similar types of piracy. Marauders and pirates didn't follow the same accords that governments did, so who knows what could have been cloaked out there.

Takahashi immediately nodded at the ensign's two suggestions. "Begin the tachyon sweep first. Let's see if there is anything that we can find out, before proceeding any farther in."

“Starting sweep now, sir.”

"What about the probe that you suggested, Ensign? Is there a way that we could use the probe to boost the scanning signal. A little- like a piggyback?" he suggested as Ensign Day gave her response on the idea. The Class 2 probe was a good idea. An long range probe with an extensive sensor suite could provide some detailed information of the asteroid field, while Incursion got her act together of what to do with the transport.

(Tag Celeste)

"Have one ready for launch, as soon as you're able. Let me know when it's configured.", the Captain said as he looked at the transport sitting on the main viewer, for what seemed like the hundredth time. If there was something cloaked inside of the asteroid field, Incursion was going to have to investigate. However, they did already have one problem that they had to finish dealing with first, which was the Folly.

After Takahashi ordered Commander Mitchell to prepare his away team, he turned to Ensign Day and the NPC science officer for a set of orders.

Takahashi turned back to where Ensign Day and her NPC counterpart were working. “Run another scan of the transport before Commander Mitchell’s team heads over. Takahashi slightly smiled at the Ensign's causal use of his rank, as she gave her suggestion. A small snort out of his nostrils the only sign that he had picked up on it. It didn't bother him, as most of the Alpha-shift bridge crew were more causal with James since he served with them more often. Charlie-Shift was more of the junior officers, and so they looked around somewhat nervously that Captain Takahashi was going to give Ensign Day a sudden dressing down for the semi- informal response.

However this really wasn't the time for that, and to be honest, it didn't bother James that much...depending on who did it. He thought about the Ensign's suggestions, shaking his head  at the latter one. "I'd rather send a containment team over there to lock down the radiation leak, rather than hacking parts off the freighter. She looks largely intact, and I'd hate to damage the ship for no reason, if we can fix it."

James tapped his combadge and opened a link to Commander Mitchell and Lieutenant Dresden. =/\= Takahashi to Mitchell. Pete, are you ready to send your team over to the transport? Ensign Day has informed me that the levels of radiation near the aft sections of the ship are blocking her scans, but the levels aren't high enough to cause immediate harm. Still be careful, and after you've accessed the ships logs, let us know when we can send a containment team over to look at the leak.

Lieutenant Dresden, once you're aboard, I'd like for you to see if you can determine whether the ship's cargo is intact or not. Our scans can't cut through the interference in the cargo section either.=/\=

Captain Takahashi turned back to Ensign Day ask she told him that the probe was ready for launch into the asteroid field.

"Launch the probe, Ensign...", James said as he turns to the main viewer as he could hear the Ensign's fingers tapping on her console. Incursion shuddered just slightly as the probe was fired from the launcher, the tiny drone soaring out into the stoned field. The Captain made a small mental note to have an engineer check the inertial dampers on that little shudder as a brief tone sounded behind him as data streamed to the tactical officer's console.

"Well Ensign? What are we picking up?" he asked, as he tried to settle himself in the command chair, trying to relax himself to get more information. Still, he tapped his finger over the keyboard on his command chair in a slightly nervous tick, waiting to hear back a report from the Ensign or Commander Mitchell and his away team.

OOC: Just got a message from Pete that he'll be offline for a little while, as some other issues have taken priority. We've all been there before! So I'm going to put an NPC in charge of the away mission with Lt Dresden, NPC Lieutenant Commander Chad Thompson our NPC Alpha-shift Second Officer.

IC:

=/\= Captain, Lieutenant Commander Thompson here. Commander Mitchell just got to the transporter room and he says that he's not feeling well. I don't that it's a good idea for him to lead the away team. I had him sent to Sickbay. Request permission to go with Lieutenant Dresden and lead the away team. =/\=

James frowned slightly at the sign that his friend was unwell at such a critical moment. Hopefully that wasn't a bad sign. However, Lieutenant Commander Thompson was a competent Second Officer and would do alright. He did his best to keep his composure as he gently tapped the communication panel on his command chair.

=/\= Request granted, Lieutenant Commander. Be careful over there. =/\=

***

Commander Mitchell nodded as he released his finger from the com-panel in Transporter Room 1, closing the link with the bridge as he slightly adjusted the front of his uniform. Checking the charging settings on his Type II hand-phaser and tricorder, he quickly re-holstered them as Lieutenant Dresden made his way into the transporter room. The NPC Second Officer looked up at the Chief of Security and gave the slightly taller man a warm smile as he extended his hand.

"Chad Mitchell, I know we haven't had a chance to really speak outside of the brief bridge crew status meetings that we've had, but I wanted to formally introduce myself.", he said with a surprisingly chipper tone of voice. Chad always had a tendency to be overly positive, sometimes to an annoying degree.

<Dresden>

The second officer cleared his throat as security chief's response, as he headed his way to the transporter pad. "Alright, when we get over there, I want you to start a sweep from the bridge aft. Transports of this class only have three decks, but have many sections going aft. I want you secure each second starting from Deck 1, while I attempt to access the ship's computer logs and try and see what happened before she was disabled. We'll be starting from the bridge. Understand? "

<Dresden>

Looking to the transporter chief, Mitchell signaled that they were ready to head over. "Energize." The warm grip of Incursion's transporter beam wrapped around him as they dematerialized from the Federation destroyer to the command center of the stricken transport. Once they rematerialized, Mitchell looked around to get a better understanding of his surroundings. A stale must filled his nostrils, causing Chad to wince as he adjusted to the aroma. The air-recycling systems must not have been working.

The command deck of the Harlem's Folly was more spacious than Incursion's, workstations spread farther apart, in order for the crew to move around more easily. The consoles were wrapped in a brown wooden paneling, giving the area a more homely feel than the helm of a Federation starship. Many of the computer screens were deactivated, flickering slightly as the ship attempted to power the damaged displays. Pulling out his transporter, Mitchell began scanning the area, if only to reconfirm Incursion's initial scans.

"Not picking up any lifesigns here. Looks like we're alone in the immediate area. " Mitchell said as started to find a console that was working correctly. "Lieutenant, I want you to report back every two minutes with your status. I have to report back to Incursion every five, so that makes sure that I hear from you twice for every one time we reach back out to our ship."  Mitchell said as he slid down to what looked like an operations console and started to see if he could access the computer core.

It took Celeste a few seconds for the information to be relayed back to her consoles.

“Sir, I’m showing a significant Tachyon Shadow of sorts, just at the edge of the asteroid field. It is waning now, so either it was a really big ship that is no longer there… or a smaller ship that is still there.”

She looked at the screen and then over to her Commanding Officer.

“Captain, I would recommend that we move adjacent to the Folly at this point right here. It would give us an unobstructed view of the asteroid field and place us outside the blast zone if the Follys warp core goes critical. I would then suggest we launch a spread of torpedoes at the 3 largest concentrations of Tachyon Particles. That will let us know if there is anything there. If there is… then they would probably be unshielded if they follow any normal cloaking device.”

Celeste was speaking about that fact that most, not all, ships with cloaking devices usually couldn’t turn on their shields while cloaked.

James watched as the image of the viewscreen changed from the exterior view, the tactical display that Ensign Day was using. As she highlighted the area that she recommended that the ship moved to, the Captain listened to her rationale and nodded. Normally he would have taken her assumption of the fighter being booby-trapped as being presumptuous, but given the abnormal tactics the pirates had been recorded using to Federation ships so far, it wasn't outside the realm of possibility.

Very few objects emitted tachyon particles, and was odd that they were spread out in the field. If there was something in the asteroid cluster, it could be waiting to spring a trap on Incursion. They needed to find out to be sure. Using torpedoes like a depth charge would help flush out anything in there.

"Alright. Prepare a low yield spread of photon torpedoes, with detonation sequences in the appropriate locations. Helm, move the ship to the coordinates that Ensign Day recommended. Take us over nice and slow. Maneuvering thrusters only.", the captain ordered as the crew moved about to follow his instructions. Incursion started to make her way around the transport, thrusters flaring from her hull as she repositioned herself between the wounded vessel and the asteroid field. As they settled into their new position, James glanced at the chronometer mounted above the viewscreen.

Commander Mitchell (NPC) and Lt Dresden had about two minutes before they were scheduled to make their first report back to the ship. Hopefully, they would have found something on-board the Harlem's Folly that would provide more of an answer to this growing mystery. The transport hadn't exploded, so that was a good sign in Takahasi's logbook.

"Captain, we're in position." the NPC helmsman reported, as James' leaned against the backrest of his command chair. The main viewer switched back to the starfield, as the captain mentally prepared his next set of orders.

"Ensign, lock on to those coordinates and fire when ready."

(Celeste)

Incursion shuttered repeatedly as a three pairs of crimson torpedoes launched from the ship's forward bays. The ordinance streaked into the field of rocks and debris, making bright flashes as they detonated. The Captain held his breath unknowingly as he waited for Celeste's report.

OOC: First post...please don't judge me!

IC:

The smell of recycled air wafted to her nose. It wasn't an unpleasant smell, just a bit sterilized. She  missed the rush of cold air that always felt so refreshing on her home planet. In truth, the Incursion was just a bit too warm compared to the climate on Andoria. But she had learned long ago to adapt to different temperatures. Still, it made her a tad homesick though she would never openly admit it.

When she got the call to join the away team, she felt a rush of adrenaline wash through her body. This was why she was there. Zipping up her uniform jacket, she slipped her throwing knife down into the inside of her boot. She always carried the hidden knife, as one never knew what it would come in handy. It was left for desperate measures, with a preference for shooting her phaser. It simply made her feel safe. After she was certain she looked like a presentable Starfleet officer, Sha'reena took a peek at the mirror. Her short white hair had a few red highlights poking out in various directions. Her eyes were large amethyst orbs, and her skin was deep as green glacial ice.

As she walked into the Transporter room, her swagger spoke of confidence and comfort within her own skin. She was a lithe hybrid, a bit taller than most female Andorians and Aenar. She gave the two superior officers a broad smile. "Ensign Sha'reena reporting for duty, Sirs." It didn't seem to bother her that this might be a dangerous mission. Her suave attitude was quite noticeable,

As she shimmered onto the Harlem Folly, Sha'reena immediately drew her phaser and began a sweep with her purple eyes. She wasn't trigger happy by any means. When it was known that there were no life sign readings, she relaxed a bit. The transport ship seemed empty. And on the Bridge, there was a lack of phaser fire and bodies. It seemed as if the people on board the vessel had up and left without warning.

"There is no evidence of an armed confrontation. Let's see what the consoles say. Perhaps the Captain had time to leave a log. Maybe we can find it in the computer's files. Worth a look, no Sir?"

She walked over to the OPs station and took a look at the readout, wondering what the computer might reveal. She left the tactical station for the Chief Security officer to investigate.

*On the Harlem's Folly*

"There is no evidence of an armed confrontation. Let's see what the consoles say. Perhaps the Captain had time to leave a log. Maybe we can find it in the computer's files. Worth a look, no Sir?"

Commander Thompson couldn't disagree with the Ensign's assessment as she slid to the operations station. As she ran her blueish-green fingers over the console, he could hear the buzzing from the computer initially neglecting her access. As the Ensign persisted, Chad decided that someone should be searching the remaining decks for some other clues to what had happened.

Sliding to what looked like an Engineering station, Chad started to see what internal information he could access. The computer was slow to respond, as he was doing query searches. Having been used to the speed of a state of the art computer system on the Incursion, it was difficult for Chad not to hide the irritation on his face.  His fingers started to jab at the keys as he asked the computer if it had any information about was causing the radiation leak that was preventing Incursion's initial scans. Much like the Ensign's attempts, his initial responses were harsh buzzes from the computer.

*Access Denied* *Access Denied*  *Access Denied*

"Stupid thing..." Chad said to no one in particular. "It's a miracle that this ship was able to get from one sector to the other, with junk like this."

(Tag Sha'reena)

Commander Thompson gave a rye smile at the Ensign's comment, as he was finally greeted by an affirmation screen giving him an internal display of the ship's systems. It seemed that many of the containment fields around the warp plasma manifold assembly had been taken off-line, which was looking to be the cause of the leak. The radiation was messing with internal scans as well. What was more concerning were that the input logs leading up to someone taking the injectors off-line were missing, which mean that Chad wouldn't be able to find out whether it had been done deliberately or not.

Before he was able to type in the inputs to reactivate the assembly, his monitor flashed and then went black. "What the...?" the second officer exclaimed in frustration as he looked over to Ensign Sha'reena. Her screen seemed to work fine, as she continued her work. Chad stood from the terminal, pushing back against the chair as he caught the Ensign's attention.

"I'm going to go down to Engineering and see if I can get the warp plasma assembly back online. I'll check in every two minutes, via the com-badge. You do the same. If you find anything in the computer logs, let me know immediately."
he said to the Ensign as he walked to the bridge doors, which hissed open at his approach. What he expected to find had been a turbolift, but instead was a long slender ladder that led to the lower decks. Chad frowned again, as he let out another long sigh.

"Well, I guess I'm climbing..."
Chad muttered to himself as he started his way down the ladder into the bowels of the transport.

Chad wasn't the only one experiencing irritation. Sha'reena hit the console a few times, as if brute force would make the screen suddenly say, "Welcome, all systems on line." Instead two words ran across her screen: "ACCESS DENIED."

With a soft groan, the Ensign spun around in her chair and watched Chad. His own frustration was evident, but even if he could keep a straight face, she would have been able to sense it through his emotions. Her antennae wiggled a bit. "I believe we are at an impasse Sir. It seems like someone didn't want others to gain access to the computer's logs."

Sha'reena nodded and turned back around to give the OPs station a dubious glare. It would have to work somehow...perhaps with a bit of hacking...Well, it was unorthodox but they needed answers. She was certain that the computer logs would contain at least some information to help solve the mystery. She cracked her knuckles and loosened her shoulders before she proceeded to attempt to hack into the computer system. She wasn't sure if she could do it at OPs, but it was worth a shot.

This wasn't exactly what she expected to be doing on the Incursion. She wanted to fight, to live on the edge, and more importantly, she wanted to help others. Escorting freighters and supply ships was a form of assistance, but there had to be more important things for them to do. It was a battle cruiser after all. But something about their current mission seemed so...off. It just wasn't right.

She tapped her combadge. =^= "Ensign Sha'reena to Thompson. I am attempting to hack into the computer system. I'll let you know if I can break in. Sha'reena, out." =^= Her slender fingers danced over the buttons as she began her first attempt to hack into the system

---

As he climbed down the ladder to deck three, Chad gave his combadge a tap to signal that he affirmed the Ensign's message. His boots clanked gently on the poorly lit engineering deck, as a damp smell filled the air. It looked like the oxygen recyclers were not working very well in this area of the ship. The Lieutenant Commander pulled out his tricorder, and opened the cover to begin scanning the area.  He detached the tiny flashlight that was mounted on the base of the device, turning it on so that it was easier for him to see.

He moved slowly down the corridor, eyes flickering between the stream of data coming onto the tricorder, and what was directly ahead of him. He passed by several closed doors, which Thompson assumed let to crew corridors and other storage rooms, so he paid him little heed. The tricorder, which had given him a small map of the deck layout to follow, was telling him that the main engineering section was at the end of the hallway.  From there he could reactivate the warp plasma manifold, whose shielding which would reduce the levels of delta radiation that was making Incursion's scans so challenging.

A few steps later, he made his way into the cramped engineering area. Confining, even compared to the limited deck space on the Incursion, Chad shuffled himself around boxes and chairs that were strewn throughout the room. Like on the transport's bridge, consoles flickered as they were attempting to stay powered. Thompson eventually found one that was seemingly able to stay active and began to access the engineering controls for the transport.

As soon as he put his fingers on the console, the few lights that were illuminating the room shut off, his console going dark as well. "Just...damn it!" Chad swore to himself as he pushed back from the control panel. Leaning down, he planned to remove the paneling underneath and see if he could rewire it to come back on.

That was until a large hand suddenly grabbed Thompson by the neck, surprising him. An overwhelming grip started to pressure on the second officer who screamed as he tried to thrash back at his unseen attacker. "Wha...!!!", he screamed as he tried to defend himself. Whoever it was had Thompson at an extreme disadvantage, the Starfleet officer having been crouched under the console. Trying to jab and kick as hard as he could, Chad yelled again as his head was slammed up against the underside of the console.

Chad saw stars, as he tried to reach for his hand phaser, the grip around his neck getting tighter. His attacked pulled back on Chad again, crashing his into the console. This time with much more brutal force. Thompson felt himself losing consciousness as he felt to the deck with a slump, his tricorder flashlight rolling off the table and onto the floor.  The light washed over his attacker, showing black boots and armor as he loomed over Thompson in victory.

The last thing Chad saw was the symbol insignia of the Reman militia engraved on the chest armor...before he felt pray to the darkness as a boot slammed into his face.

"Hurgghhh..."

On the bridge of the Harlem's Folly, Ensign Sha'reena would be at her workstation, attempting to hack into the operations logs. The lights on the bridges flickered and went dark, leaving the junior officer alone in the darkness.

Or so she thought as a pair of heavy hands grabbed her shoulders and threw her to the deck...

Or so she thought as a pair of heavy hands grabbed her shoulders and threw her to the deck...

As the lights flickered and went black, Sha'reena found herself cursing under her breath. And she had been so close to hacking in! Her antennae began to wiggle as she felt a presence in the room. Before she could react, two heavy hands lifted her from the console and threw her against the floor. As the pain seared through her side, another thought jumped into her mind: grab your phaser. She pretended to be more injured then she was, which would probably only work for a few seconds. With a fluid movement she removed her phaser and held it up in a defensive pose.

"What's the matter big boy?" She was furious, and the adrenaline blocked out the pain she had been feeling. "Do you have to turn off the lights to fight with a girl? How unmanly." She couldn't see, but then...when was that ever a problem. She had taken hand-to-hand combat classes with her optical boosters turned completely off. Sha'reena smiled.

"Let's make this an even fight, shall we?" She dropped the phaser onto the floor and lifted her fists, her feet exploring the cold hard floor as she began to move in a cat-like fashion. She made the choice for better or worse. It was brash. Possibly stupid, but this kind of fighting was instinctual.

Sha'reena used her senses and memory of the Bridge to gauge the area. He still had an advantage, but she knew many fighting techniques. She had been born to be a fighter, and learned about it when she had been a blind child at school. She knew plenty about big hands and bullies. This was no different...well, except for the fact that he could potentially kill her. And something told her that he wasn't much of a talker...

Post  Celeste Day on Mon Feb 24, 2014 10:55 am

"Ensign, lock on to those coordinates and fire when ready."

Celeste had kept an eye on the fields as they had approached.  When the Incursion stopped, she targeted the three of the closest Tachyon fields and fired.  Then she watched the console to start reading out the information as it came across.

That was one thing that she had to train herself to do from day one… study the information, not watch the pretty lights on the screen.  One of her instructors had drilled it into her.  “You are staring at the screen, watching your pretty torpedoes and YOU ARE NOT WATCHING THE WARBIRD DECLOAKING AT YOUR @ss!!!” he would say.  So instead of watching the detonation, she was watching the sensor readings.

Incursion shuttered repeatedly as a three pairs of crimson torpedoes launched from the ship's forward bays. The ordinance streaked into the field of rocks and debris, making bright flashes as they detonated. The Captain held his breath unknowingly as he waited for Celeste's report.

As the detonations happened, Celeste relayed that information to Captain Takahashi.

“Sir, we have three detonations.  All of the torps hit something, but it was small… much smaller than a ship.  Scanning debris field now.  Looks to be the size of a sensor pod or…”

Celeste was suddenly cut off as the Incursion shuddered to a stop.  Something had locked on to the ship.  “Sir, we have tracker beams targeting the Incursion.  Scanning again sir, the minefield is laced with cloaked tractor beam turrets.  We are caught by no less than 10.  Also, a broad band signal just went out from several of them.  It is probably relaying that we sprung a trap.”

Celeste put up her findings on the screen.  Over the image of the asteroid field, she overlaid the tachyon fields and then superimposed the tractor beams.  They were caught in a very extensive spider web, one made up of cloaked tractor beams.

“Sir, there is no way a normal pirate group could finance this many devices.  It has to be Romulan.”  She thought back to her simulations against Romulan ship and how the Incursion had done.

“Sir, there is no way a normal pirate group could finance this many devices.  It has to be Romulan.”  She thought back to her simulations against Romulan ship and how the Incursion had done.

"Don't make that assumption, Ensign. We don't know anything about whose set this trap up. The black market can have some deep pockets.", the captain said sternly as his fingers started to tapping on his own control panels, getting status reports from throughout the ship. "First of all, we need to get out of it...", he muttered under the rumbling of the deckplates. If those sensor pods were signaling for someone to intercept them, Takahashi needed to free his ship and get the away team off the Harlem's Folly now.

James grabbed onto the armrests of his command chair as Incursion shuddered more violently under the grip of the offending tractor pods. Several azure beams of light could be seen lancing out and latching onto the escort's shields, causing them to snap and crackle violently, as they attempted to resist the hold that was being forced onto them.

"Captain, our shields are being drained! 90%. 83%. 79%" the NPC operations officer shouted in alarm as he started to attempt to reroute power from non-essential systems to try and boost the ship's defenses.

"Helm, back us off. Full impulse!" James ordered as another violent shuttered rocked through Incursion. Several officers were thrown to the deck as the pathetic whine of the vessel's impulse engines could be heard straining to try to break the ship free.

"It's no good, Captain. The number of beams that are holding onto the ship have us locked in place. I'm trying everything I can!" Another shrill alarm burst from the helmsman's console. "Captain, the impulse manifolds are overheating!"

""Helm, shut down the impulse engines. Tactical, lock quantum torpedoes on those pods and destroy them. Full spread. Fire!"
James ordered, spitting out orders almost as quickly as his mouth would rattle them off.

Incursion spat out a wrath of quantum torpedoes into the asteroid field. However, as the anti-matter ordinance crossed the azure beams they started to spiral out of control, as if they were being confused. They streaked around in all directions, randomly crashing into the rock-field around them with violent explosions that momentarily washed out the viewscreen.

"Tactical, what happened?" James asked quickly, as the operations officer shouted another dire status. "Shields at 40 percent and falling, Captain!

(Tag Celete)

James grunted at Celete's response as the ship shook again. The answer wasn't her fault, it's just not what he wanted to here. "Target phasers and fire!", the Captain ordered as he heard her fingers flying over the weapons display. Incursion's cannons unleashed bursts of phaser-fire, in attempt to save themselves from the technological spider-web they were ensnared in.  Weapons fire, know to be powerful enough to tear through Jem-Hadar shielding, erupted into space. Yet the powerful bursts nearly instantly dissipated less than a thousand meters from the ship, giving out in a heartless fizzle.

James slammed his fists on the sides of his chair in frustration. Here, one of the decidedly most powerful combat vessels in the Federation was being disabled by a group of defense pods that were right in front of them! The Incursion rocked again as James spun around, and looked to Ensign Day for an answer from his tactical officer.

"Suggestions, Ensign?"

*Onboard the Harlem's Folly. *

Adorned his black combat armor, the Reman solider snarled at Ensign Sha'reena. His voice carried the screeching of a Reman battlecry as it echoed off the confined walls of the transport's bridge. In the darkness, a Reman had an overwhelming visual advantage.  His people had been tuned to the darkness from birth. He could make out his opponent much more easily than she would be able to, even if he couldn't make out all of her features in the black.  However, hearing her throw her weapon to the deck, the experienced infantryman labeled the young woman a fool. Her defeat would be swift.

He moved with an unbelievable speed as his large boot lashed out and slammed into the Starfleet officer's gut. He gave a scaly sneer as his fist lashed out, jamming his palm into the Andorian-hybrid's jaw.  As he heard a slump to the deck, he stood with a triumphant pose, as the force of those blows would have been enough to fell the strongest opponent.

Or so he thought, as a flurry of jabs and kicks slammed into his face and chest, sending his sprawling and slamming into the control panel behind him. Even in the darkness, the Reman saw stars as he tired to stand to his feet another blunt jab striking his face. Crashing to the deck again, he growled as he vaulted his full body weight into his opponent, sending them both flying over the command chair in an ungraceful sprawl.

(Tag Sha'reena)

Scrambling to get on top of his felled opponent in an attempt to pin her to the deck, the Reman let out another blood-curdling scream. He was able to get atop her, as ramming his knee into her gut. Raising his fists above his head, he planned to slam them down on her head, as hard as he could.

The plan had been to capture both officers that boarded the trap they had set. However, if he ended up killing this one, so be it...

She had been foolish to underestimate her opponent. When he hit her jaw, she fell once again on floor. Her body slumped but not her mind. He was wearing armor. She could feel it when she had been punched. All she was wearing was cloth. However, she wasn't about to give up. She kicked as hard as she could when he came close, aiming for the place where the sun doesn't shine. This seemed to make him even angrier. She laughed and tasted blood on her full lips.

"I guess I was right...not a talker." She forced herself to her feet and began moving again. She was pretty banged up, but nothing seemed to be broken. Yet. She listened with her ears and antennae. "Still a coward, to attack a woman in the dark." This time she sneered at him.

When he attacked again, she hit the ground hard and heard a crack. That was not good. Pail seared through her arm. But she blotted out the pain. This was now a matter of survival. This seemed to be the end for her, until her fingers touched something familiar. Her phaser. She grabbed it so fast and fired, she didn't care if it was set to stun or kill. She only hoped that it hit the target she was aiming at. She tapped her commbadge. =^= This is Sha'reena, I need some help! =^=

Then it occurred to her...this was a trap. It had been since the very beginning. No doubt the "Access Denied" error had kept arising because their foe, whoever they were, had rigged it to be that way. Were the pirates, Romulans, misfits that were trying to survive?

"Tactical, what happened?" James asked quickly, as the operations officer shouted another dire status. "Shields at 40 percent and falling, Captain!

Celeste growled a bit, more at the situation and not her captain. “I don’t know Captain. Somehow, the beams are fouling up the targeting on the torps. They are acting more like gravity beams and not typical tractor beams, sir.”

James grunted at Celete's response as the ship shook again. The answer wasn't her fault, it's just not what he wanted to here. "Target phasers and fire!", the Captain ordered as he heard her fingers flying over the weapons display. The Incursion rocked again as James spun around, and looked to Ensign Day for an answer from his tactical officer.

"Suggestions, Ensign?"

A rich and colorful curse came out of her mouth. The offensive weapons were completely useless. More than that, they could actually hurt the Incursion. So what did that leave them with? She just started throwing out ideas.

“We could reverse the polarity of something and shoot it at them. Maybe our Deflector Dish can scramble the beams long enough for us to get out of here. Or……”

She trailed off as one of her other ideas probably had more merit.

“What if we use our tractor beams to either move larger rocks in front of them or smash them, sir?” Before he even answered she was already scanning the area and found a few of them that would meet their needs. “I’m putting it up on screen now.”

Up on the screen showed a tactical view with the beams that were holding the Incursion. Red dots were the asteroids that she had targeted.

Sha'reena's Reman attacker screamed as her phaser blast struck him right in the chest, picking him up off the ground and throwing him stunned into the deck. As the young ensign's cry for help when through the communicator, a static scratching was the only reply. The doors to the Harlem's Folly bridge rushed open
and assistance arrived, but not for the Starfleet ensign.

Three more Reman soliders came flooding out the ladder, moving faster in the blacked quarters than the young ensign would be able to anticipate. The nearest most one slammed his knee into the Andorian-hybrid's jaw, throwing her to the deck again. Her hand phaser went sprawling as her second attacker made his way toward her with his own hand disruptor drawn, before his compatriot stopped him.

"Stop! We didn't come to kill Starfleet . We came for the ship! Remember what Ramesus said. Any Starfleet officer that would be a useful source of information...", he shouted as his subordinate hissed a frustrated acknowledgement. He glared down at the wounded young officer, giving a toothy grin as the other two colleagues walked to the bridge consoles and unlocked them. One of the Remans gave a shrieking laugh as sensor data came through the display.

"Good! Good! The Federation vessel is trapped in our tractor net and is draining their shields. Our salvage vessels are on their way." he cackled, as the third Reman finally spoke, clearly the leader of the group.

"We should get back to Ramesus, so we can tell him what we've captured. There's no reason for this transport to be here to watch our ships carve up that destroyer..."
, he said as he sat in the Harlem's Folly's command chair. "Close down the reactor leak. Power up the engines and main systems. Set a course for the Zedra Sector in the Neutral Zone. Warp 3." he ordered as the two other Reman soldiers began manning stations.

The commanding Reman suddenly turned his chair around and faced Ensign Sha'reena, who was still laying on the deck. "And take this Federation garbage to the holding cell on deck three with the other one we found. Ramesus will know what to do with them when we get back." he muttered as he quickly drew his disruptor and stunned the poor officer. As the Harlem's Folly's main systems could be heard slowly powering up, Sha'reena was thrown over the shoulder of one of the Remans guards, also while dragging the solider that she had stunned earlier behind him over the grated deck.

*Onboard the Incursion*

“Captain, shields are at 25 percent! We’re detecting power failures throughout the ship. However those pods are draining our shields, they’re started to affect other ship’s systems!”, the NPC operations officer alerted the crew.

Incursion shuddered violently again as the main viewer changed to the suggested target asteroids. James didn't even take a second to see which rocks were being suggested. No one had a better idea, and the crew was running out of time.

"Great idea, Ensign. Target the asteroid in sector R59 and smash it into the nearest emitter pod. If it works, just keep smashing the pods until we are able to break free."
, the Captain ordered. They didn't have time to experiment. If it worked, they needed to get out of here.

The Captain could hear the ensign’s fingers flying over the console as the Incursion lanced out her own tractor beams towards the nearest asteroid. Incursion started to tremble as the stresses from the offending tractor pods challenged the Federation ship’s attempt to rotate. Their makeshift stellar weapon drifted through space as it crashed into the diminutive tractor pod with a violent explosion, obliterating it from the starfield.

A small cheer erupted on the bridge, before being tempered by another violent shutter. James turned back around toward Ensign Day, trying to keep the smile off his face, despite the dire circumstances.

“Well, Ensign? What are you waiting for? Grab another rock!” he ordered as the Incursion’s tractor beam lanced out again.

It must have been dumb luck that she had hit him, and for a moment she felt triumph. Holding her broken arm she rose slowly and shakily off the deck floor, and was about to attempt communicating with Thompson when three other Remans entered the Bridge.

She dropped her phaser and landed on the floor in even more pain. She tried to ignore it as much as possible. Luckily her jaw wasn't broken, but she had damaged her lip again and bitten the inside of her mouth. She could taste the blue blood that poured from the mood. Sha'reena spit some of it on the floor, though really she would have liked to put it in one of the Reman's faces.

So she was useful...Or so they assumed. Something told her it was better to be useful than dead. These aliens were much stronger than her. She gritted her teeth against the pain. The only thing that really interested her was the area they were headed too. Had a Starfleet vessel ever been so far into the neutral zone?

The commanding Reman suddenly turned his chair around and faced Ensign Sha'reena, who was still laying on the deck. "And take this Federation garbage to the holding cell on deck three with the other one we found. Ramesus will know what to do with them when we get back." he muttered as he quickly drew his disruptor and stunned the poor officer. As the Harlem's Folly's main systems could be heard slowly powering up, Sha'reena was thrown over the shoulder of one of the Remans guards, also while dragging the solider that she had stunned earlier behind him over the grated deck.

Something was wrong. Everything on the ship should be coming back online. Then why was it all she could see was black? With her good arm, she reached up and tapped her implants. Nothing happened. That meant she was as blind as a Terran bat. They must have been damaged in the brawl. She cursed under her breath, and groaned when the Reman lifted her up off the floor.

The trip to the holding cell had kept her mind busy, trying to figure out what had happened and how could she get her implants working again. Once deposited into the cell, she listened and heard Chad breathing. Her antennae wiggled as she would have to depend on them and her ears for sensory output. "Ensign Sha'reena reporting for duty, Commander." A touch of sardonic humor laced through her voice. She looked like a mess, standing there holding her arm, bleeding from her mouth and lips, not to mention bruises under her clothes. But she summoned a lopsided smile.

”Just like a game of dodge ball.  Bam!, you’re out.” Muttered Celeste as two more of the tractor beams were destroyed.  The Incurson shuttered a bit and lurched as she was partially free, but not fully.

“Sir, the Folly has shut down their reactor leak and they are powering up their systems.  I’m reading our people aboard… and Remans!”

Instinctively, like most people on the bridge, Celeste knew it was a trap.  That meant that there were other, more formidable ships on their way in.

“Not so fast, girl!” she said, mostly to herself. For once she was glad for all the training classes she had almost paid attention to in the Academy.  Most were lost, but she remembered one person always saying to configure your consoles on each ship you are on.  That way, no matter what, your fingers know where to go.  Something about muscle memory.

So know, almost as she could think the command, her fingers were doing it.  Even though still be tractored by a few of the turrents, Celeste dedicated a beam with the most power to the Folly, leaching onto it like a sucker fish on a shark.  The jolt shook the [iIncursion[/i] and not telling what it did to the more fragile freighter, but they were good and latched.  Now, either the transport was stuck, or it would pull them out.  She watched as a 4rd and 5th turret was destroyed by smaller asteroids.  "Only two more turrets sir."

The Captain's heartbeat shot up as Celete reported Reman activity on the transport. Even when Incursion shaking and banging all around them, his face still showed a slight shock. "Did you say Reman?", he asked as Ensign Day confirmed with a simple nod. The Remans were a slave cast of the Romulan Empire, which had been brutally subjected after a failed attempted to overthrow the Empire under Praetor Shinzon. As a species many Remans had attempted to flee Romulan space for fear of persecution. The reports that Captain Takahashi had read has said that the Romulan had been working to nearly wipe out the Remans, as revenge for their attempted coup.

Still, that meant a dangerous adversary was at work over on the Harlem's Folly. Even though the Captain hadn't ordered Ensign Day to lock onto the transport with a tractor beam, he was quietly glad that she had "Lock on to Chad and Sha'renna with transporters. Beam them back to us." the Captain said as the NPC operations officer shouted.  "We can't, Captain! Not with the shields still...", he was interrupted as Incursion bucked once again. The remaining tractor beams had latched onto the ship's hull, causing the Defiant-class vessel to heave. The running lights suddenly dimmed, as consoles flickered.

"Never mind, Captain. The shields have failed anyway. However those pods are doing it, they're draining our power. Warp Engines are offline, power to the weapons are failing. I'm attempting to re-route power to the transporters to get a lock... but something is making it hard to get a hold of them!"
he shouted urgently as Ensign Day reported that there were only two emitters left to destroy. Incursion bucked again, the ship making more of a whined stress, as a console exploded on the bridge.

"Captain, the transport is moving! She's attempt to pull away from our tractor beam at impulse speed. Her hull stress is increasing, but so is ours, between trying to hold her and the tractor beams from those pods!" Operations reported. Incursion was rotating more slowly, attempting to grab onto another asteroid, between all of the tractor forces that were being put on her hull. The starship groaned in protest, as it sounded it was going to be ripped apart!

On Ensign Celete's tactical console, incoming vessels could be detected by the long range sensors. Whoever those pods had been contacting, were on their way.

The Reman commander slammed his fists on the captain's chair, nearly breaking the armrests in frustrations as his compatriot jammed the console. "The Federation ship has locked a tractor beam on us!", he shouted as his commander shouted an order back. "Tear us away from them! Full impulse!" he shouted as the transport shuddered violently as they attempted to break away. The mission objective was to capture the Federation ship, not to be captured by them!

Besides Reman salvage reinforcements should be arriving within four or five minutes from one of their nearest bases. Several stolen Federation runabouts and Romulan scout vessels would bring crews to board the disabled Defiant- class ship, and start to part the vessel out. Given the last sensor status he had been given, the Starfleet's vessel shields were down. This meant that his allies would be able to carve that ship into pieces.

*In the holding bay*

Lieutenant Commander Thompson rolled over as Sha'reena was thrown into the holding cell with him, his body screaming in pain, even as he scrambled over to see if his junior colleague was alright. The fact that she was making jokes meant that the Ensign was doing well enough. He slumped next to her as their Reman guard stood by the door, a forcefield snapping into place.

"Remans? What the hell are the Remans doing here?" Commander Thompson asked as the Ensign gave him a similar gaze of confusion. Chad let out a yelp as the transport shuddered violently, throwing the two officers together. Propping himself up against the wall, the second officer grit his teeth as he looked around for a way out of the hell.

"Whatever the hell is happening, we need to find a way out of here and back to Incursion. Suggestions?"
